I. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

‘Global entrepreneurs’ are entrepreneurs as defined in clause II of this white paper, as entrepreneurs doing business globally whilst having both themselves and/or their representatives made aware of the following; Religious and Gender issues, Legal issues as well as Race/Ethnic issues relevant to their countries of business which they are sure to encounter in today’s world.

II. MY DEFINITION OF AN ‘ENTREPRENEUR’

Scriptural basis: Proverbs 8:12, I wisdom dwell with prudence, and find out knowledge of witty inventions.


“My definition of an entrepreneur is a person who receives a “witty invention” from the Most High God (El Elyon) and creates a framework or vehicle by which to physically manifest the said idea/invention/product/business/service. There is more often than not some profit or benefit that is realized as a result of this “witty invention” being physically manifested by the processes the entrepreneur puts into place. The said profit or benefit may be in cash or kind and usually benefits all involved in the process of producing the “witty invention” as well as the end consumer of the product therefore everyone wins as is evidenced in the lives of Dr. M.G. “Pat” Robertson, Andrew Waites and Kendra Todd.

III. CHARACTERISTICS OF A GLOBAL ENTREPRENEUR:

My view of the matter builds upon my definition of an entrepreneur as cited above. I hereby submit that the ‘global entrepreneur’ of today must be alert to religious, gender, legal and racial/ethnic differences, complexities and needs when embarking on ventures. I briefly examine each of these characteristics below.

· Religious and Gender awareness – as a result of my research, I think it most appropriate to state that in this day and age ‘global entrepreneurs’ must be alert to, as well as aware of religious differences or similarities within the nations in which we as ‘global entrepreneurs’ operate. We must also be sensitive to the role that religion plays and its impact on gender issues. I choose to highlight these two points together because it seems that religion and gender sometimes go hand in hand. With all the differences in religion that sometimes stimulate gender issues, such as Sharia Islamic law, there is a need for us to operate with the knowledge that some nations with religious and gender issues may at first be taken aback by Christianity and doing business with Females. However it is good to note that Gloria Copeland is a Christian preacher who was allowed to preach on the airwaves via Believer’s Voice of Victory in certain Middle Eastern countries though their Islamic laws prohibited this. The fact remains that she and Kenneth Copeland Ministries, which is a Christian ministry, paid for the air time in those countries thereby profiting the local television station. This in turn allowed them to televise and stay on the air. Robert Kiyosaki indicates in his writings that money knows no color, creed or gender and this appears to be true.

· Legal Awareness – ‘global entrepreneurs’ must be aware of the laws governing the nations in which we operate such as Islamic Sharia law in Saudi Arabia. Another example is in the United States of America there are both federal and state laws to follow. We must also be aware that at times as indicated with Gloria Copeland above, there may be instances in which those laws can be manipulated to benefit us if we are benefitting the nations in which we operate.

· Race/Ethnic awareness – ‘global entrepreneurs’ must be aware that race and ethnic differences do exist and handle themselves accordingly. As for me, I am of Trinidadian background which essentially denotes I grew up among and within every race and ethnicity possible. This is one of the beauties of being a true Trinidadian; we know no color, race or ethnicity. By this I simply mean that we are varietal. Therefore what another person looks like matters not to us. However when dealing with other countries it is highly obvious that not all think as we do and as such we make provision for this by tolerance (after the shock of course) of others’ intolerance.

          An example of this is with the owner of a soda/soft-drink and confectionary factory in Trinidad and Tobago. To allow him to enter the international market he had to change his last name. As long as people did not know his race, they allowed him into their markets. Sadly, he did in fact change his name. The good news though is that he became a rather wealthy man. He adapted. It is my hope that we no longer have to do such things to succeed in the business world. It is my advice that anyone considering doing business in Trinidad and Tobago, do so, mindful of the variety we have and do not attempt to suppress but seek to enhance this in some way.

IV. CONCLUSION:

I do agree the characteristics of ‘global entrepreneurs’ and/or our representatives should on some level include the following characteristics as highlighted by Michael Eskew that his future employees be, “trade literate, sensitive to foreign cultures, conversant in different languages, technology savvy, capable of managing complexity, and ethical.” However there is a need to add my further insight that we as entrepreneurs and/or our representatives must be capable of Religious and Gender awareness, Legal Awareness as well as Race/Ethnic awareness and act with requisite sensitivity regarding the nations in which we do global business.
